Evaluation

  1. The way we wanted to portray our film of “Where’s my Mr Right?” is to use the typical conventions that are seen in a romantic comedy. We use stereotypically characters used in this genre of film, of the typical unloved and wanting to find love in a film, we found this through our research which is represented through the character Bridget Jones in the Bridget Jones trilogy where she is wanting to find love but is always unlucky in succeeding, the character in our film is shown to be depressing and troubled throughout the opening of our film. On the other hand we have the bubbly and party girl type of character who is paired normally with a dull character like our character Zoey. We have used the typical stereotyping of the charters as we thought this was generally always used in romantic comedy films which were noticeable through our research. We thought that if we didn’t use the stereotypes it wouldn’t be as effective as it wouldn’t hold that main storyline of the girl finding love.

We have stereotyped two types of women in society which are shown through this genre of film. The depressed, upset, lonely girl who is finding love who we are introduced instantly in the opening titles showing the audience the type of film this is going to be like as it has this character introduced instantly as she is crying and upset. The phone call introduces the other main character in the storyline this shows the closeness between the two characters and show the audience the relationship of the characters, as this character is strong and outspoken and is not afraid to say what she think especially to her friends.

  1. For the institution of our film we chose Paramount, from the research we did together as a good the main institution film that was used and showed the popularity of top grossing film was Paramount in the genre of romantic comedies. As this was really noticeable in our research, and as this is such a well-know global film company this would be the best institution to use as our company as viewers would have that fan base for that particular company and trusts the film they are instituting as they would only brand films that they know will do well globally at the box office.
  2. For our primary audience our target was between the ages of 15-25 as this is the main cinema audience age that go to cinema, targeting a big audience will help bring in audience numbers as because of the type of genre we are doing it fits between that age cap as the film contains both the comedy element and drama element which I think will appeal for this audience. The main audience that I believe will come to see the film is women, as it appeals and implies what all women are like in their love lives and how they deal with it, and this audience can relate to what the film is portraying as in society this is what people perceive women to be so they can relate to the problems the characters have as they may have experienced it.

Our films secondary audience is the male audience, we think our film can also appeal to this audience because of the ending of the film involving the pictures of the main characters and the men she has been in relationships with. As the film is about relationship, the characters of the men play a big part in the film as each story in the film will focus on the different males and as well as how the women coped in the relationship but also the men so this can appeal to this male audience as they can relate to the storyline. During the end when the pictures our coming up on the credits I think because of the men in the pictures it can appeal to the male audience as they have the knowing that male characters are involved in the film.

However overall the main target audience for this type of film is typically women.

  1. The credits at the end involving the pictures collage with the titles, I think this is very effective as it attracts the audience to wonder why this depressing and dull character at the beginning of the opening film has become like this, when in these pictures she is similar to her best friend in the film now, and makes the audience ponder why she has become the way she is making them want to looking on and find out.  The story is shown through the pictures and the storyline of the film is shown to the audience as the pictures are the beginning of how she has become to this person who is completely different. Setting the narrative tension.
  2. I also think the song plays a big part to attract to the audience, this song is not very well- known however it is very catchy and cheery which contrasts completely to the atmosphere of the character in the opening of the scene.  The character is very moody and depressed throughout the opening title and the contrasting effects of the song make the scene come out more and they are so different from each other. The song is called “Two Birds” this relates to the title of the film of “Where is my Mr Right?”, two birds can represents the two main characters of Zoey and Donna but also can imply the characters of a male and a female and how they are together, the theme of the storyline is finding that male partner and I think the connotation of the song title work well with the title of the film as they both represent the finding of love or being in love.

  1. When using the technologies of making the film I found it easier than we did in previous products. We did a lot of re shooting in our filming to get the perfect shots in each of the scenes we wanted to achieve, trying to achieve the best continuity and not making any obvious errors when filming, especially when we filmed on two separate days. For example when entering the house in the first few seconds of the live action films we continuously re shot this scene at different angles; one outside the car looking through the front window, behind the shoulder shot, point of view shot, and when we felt we had achieved a good shot we still re shot so we got it perfect the next time and making it even more better then previously. When shooting we struggled to get the characters movement in the shot, and I think the shot we achieved showed the character more and what she is doing making the audience understand what the is going on with the character. Also when editing we learnt different skills involving the slide transitions at the beginning of the film which I though was really effective using the adobe premiere, this technology helped us fix errors within shots, using the slide transitions to fix continuity errors and making the scenes slide more together without pausing.

The slide transitions were shown through our research of the film "Definitely Maybe", we thought this was effective as it made it more unique and different compared to other films and even though we used the effect from this specific film, we put our own twist on it to make it our own. When starting off using the slide transitions we struggled with getting to grips with how to use the programme to enable us to use this effective, by practising and a lot of work together we managed to use it,using the key frames to help us guide our vision of what we wanted it to look like into the film. The technology is this circumstances helped us take out continuity errors that we noticed when editing the clips and the slide transitions fitted well into this sequence so using this effect made the errors less obvious and disguise the errors. The slide transitions that we originally wanted to use was the shots coming in a straight line shown in the clip 'Definitely Maybe' but because of the continuity errors we had made we couldn't achieve this but however the outcome we had was much better then the original plan that we thought out as it was different and not to similar to the research from the film.

From the previous products we have done I think the most I have learnt is too use the most camera angles and camera movements as you can, as using each angle and movement on a different scene will bring more variation in shots to see what the best shot would be suitable for the scene. This will make the ideas that we bring to the table have a better outcome of what you wanted to achieve as you physically see the different shots that are used to make you're idea work better.

    Ending of Film

This is the image of our ending of the film. I think our ending is the most effective and professional looking part of our film, the use of the build up and collage of the pictures fit in with the theme and speed of the music, and shows the amount of men this character has been in love with but been unsuccessful.
We used the pictures to show the audience the men that have been in this characters life, giving them an insight of her life before the character mentions any of the men she has been with. It very effective looking with the collaging and layering of the pictures makes all the pictures stand out when they lie on top of one another.
The typography is pink and uses the same writing throughout the whole of the clip keeping it looking the same- neat and professional looking. The pink suggests the girliness and fun of the characters together, but also pink implies the connotation of love showing the theme this film is going in, also with the writing over the different picture it could present to the audience that this character is in love with one of these men.
The title "Where's My Mr.Right?" represents the characters is looking for that one person she wants to be in love with, showing the audience this film is going to show the journey the character is going to happen between her relationships and how in the end she is going to find her "Mr.Right", also with the title written over the pictures of the different boyfriends she has had, it can present that maybe one of these characters is Mr.Right?
The Fade out in the clip is also effectively, when the pictures fade out and only the writing is left it happens at the end of song making it a good ending as it fits just in time. When the writing is left it shows that this is going to go into the next scene and the journey of the character is about to begin.

    Final Piece

    Music/Sound

In the last lesson today we have, we are closely looked at our shooting, making sure we have included everything we need to make it look professional, looking at the transitions from shot to shot, the dialogue, and the credits making sure everything is perfect to be handed in. Specifically we looked at the music as we though in some areas the music was too quiet as we didn’t increase the volume after dialogue has been spoken. We used the audio effects on the programme to improve what was needed. Using key frames in the audio effects we corrected each part that we felt needed the music to be either quieter or louder in each part.

    Free Lesson 7/3/12

Today in a free period as a group we did some final editing before the dealine lesson on friday. We corrected titles and credits to make them flow through with the opening more, changing the different transitions used for the texts making them all the same and look similar to each other, to make it look more professional. We zoomed in on our Paramount logo and our own studio logo to make them fit the screen, just making sure that every looks right and professional.

    Logo Problem

With our original logo we have created, we found that we made the logo too small to fit in the screen in the movie maker programme as when trying to zoom up into the image it became pixelated and difficult to see making the logo look unprofessional and messy. Therefore we had to redo the logo making the logo bigger for the image to look sharp and professional when put into our opening scene. We still kept the same logo design but simply just made it bigger and changed the position of the writing using Photoshop.
Doing this it will keep our opening scene look professional and more like a realistic opening scene with the logos.

    Added Script

this is part of the extra conversation between the two characters, we thought this conversation would show the audience an insight of what the film is going to contain, as Zoey says "Why can't I find Mr Right?" and knowing the film is going to be called "Where is Mr Right?" the audience knows this is what the film is going to contain.

Donna: You are so depressing Zoey.

Zoey: Why can't I find my Mr Right?

Donna: Just stop looking and be like me, I'm still having fun in life.

Zoey: But I want to settle down my wild child days are over, and all my relationships have ended in tears. I just want to be happy.

    Media Lesson Today

Unfortunately today we didn't have the camera as we learnt it to Kelly and Louise at the weekend after we filmed for our shots and they haven't bring it in therefore we can't do any editing in adding our extra footage. Instead today we will be doing our credits and adding our institution into the beginning credits.

    Extra Filming

25th Febuary we did some more shooting to add scenes to our opening scene. Before filming we planned out all the footage we needed and wrote out our script that we needed to re write to make the conversation between the two characters longer. We managed to get all the footage we needed: a reaction shot of Zoey when Donna is walking through the door, conversation between the two characters and then we re-shoot Donna's entrance walking into the house and walking up the stairs. The shots that we got we much better then what we had previously  as we remebered to keep with the 180 degree rule and did more shots to widen our range of different camera angles and movements. We remembered to keep with the continuity making sure hair, makeup, clothing, scenery and props were used in the same way as before and in the same place so the audience wouldn't know we had to film on two separate days. There was no problems involving the camera and actors.

    Fonts

These are some of the fonts we are thinking of using as our credits in our film opening. The Typography of this writing is very girly and feminine, with the ilatics of the writing. As the writing is quite busy and stand out, we want the colours of the writing to be quite simple so the beginning of the opening credits doesn't look too busy when running through.

The second image of writing is what we are planning to use the writing is very girly and fun fitting in with the theme of a romantic comedy showing the theme this film will have of being girly and fun. The writing has ilatics and stars in continuing with the feminine and youthful effect.

    Copyright Approval

As we wanted to use the song "Two Birds" by Regina Spektor we emailed her management a few weeks ago, regularly we checked are inbox seeing if they had replied by unfortunatley they never got back to us, and as our time was runnning out to edit and to start filming our opening scene we had to think of something else. We still wanted to use this song as we thought it was best song to fit our title opening. We therfore needed to find a good cover version of the song, we searched youtube for cover versions of this song, we found this cover on youtube which has a soft and upbeat tune to it with a really good singing voice which we thought was perfect to fit in with our opening sequence. We emailed the girl on youtube saying how we were filming for our as-level media and we thought her cover of this song fitted in and would be good to feature in our opening, we had a quick responce back and she was willingly allowed us to use her cover version.

    Pictures of Costumes and Shooting

These are the costumes that the characters 'Zoey' and 'Donna-May' are wearing in the opening scene, we wanted the character 'Zoey' to look very simple and portray the mood of the atmosphere we wanted to give off in the opening scene. 'Donna-May' is very loud and outspoken she is wearing a stand out costume making are completely opposite and contrast against the other character 'Zoey' where she is wearing dark and dull colours.

These are some pictures of the day shooting, giving an inside look of what happened when filming our opening scene.

    Extra Filming

To improve our opening scene to enable it to get a higher grade we will have to add a few more shots and improvements to shots to add. At the beginning of the film we need to have an establishing shot of the scenery of where our film is going to take place, this is a normal element to have in a movie giving the audience a knowing of where the film is going to be set. We also need to have a shot of the main character driving towards the house this will add to the stablishing shot of the knowing of where the film is going to be set in. When Ellie enters the opening scene we need to improve on how she makes her entrance into the house, adding a shot of her walking into the house or up to the house and also adding a shot outside of the house watching her walk up the stairs adding to the shot of her feet walking up the stairs. To improve the shot of Ellie's feet walking up the stairs we need to reshoot this as ellie becomes off balance and moves out the shot in the original shooting so we had to cut this bit off therefore having this cut makes the shot in the rough cut jumpy. We are also needing to do the dialogue when Ellie walks into the room as the shots cut suddenely making it jumpy and not run through. We also needs to do an ending as the ending of the rough cut cuts off.

    Logo

These are examples of our logo for our studio productions, we wanted to portray our studios as professional and key to theme being a fun, and light hearted production company. We used quite girly colours of reds, pinks, blues and white to represent this theme we are wanting to portray.

this logo is our final design we thought by having girly colours would only appeal to a women audience and in future movies the audience would decrease because of this error. We thought the image is iconic for filming production of a film reel, and iconic for movies. We kept the typography as we thought it worked well against the background and stand out although it is simple.

    Rough Cut

this is a rough cut of our opening scene so far, we have not yet added the music, titles or ending as we are still needing to shoot some extra footage to get the opening right.

    Slide Transitions

this clip is an example of our slide transitions in the opening scene, we think this has worked really well as the clips all fit together in this style of opening. To create this style we had to think about the timing of each clip coming in and the way to show a busy working lifestyle to portray this character and what she is like before she speaks and the audience knows more about her. I think when we add the music..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKR1bRniFco the way the slides move and the style of this effect works well.

    Shooting

On Saturday we filmed for our opening scene, we wanted to use the whole day for filming but unfortunately some of the actors couldn't make it on the time we wanted to, so we filmed a couple of hours later as planned. Due to the weather on the day the wind on the day was making it hard for us to get a clean shot of the scene we wanted as the wind kept moving the tripod, it was hard to hear the actors speak due to the wind this is shown in the shot of the character 'Donna' in the car on the phone to 'Zoey', we will have to re-record the voices using post synching to make the speaking clips more clear when they are speaking, we will need to make sure that the speech the actor is doing again is te correct timing as in the clip. When walking the actors costume and hair kept blowing in the wind making it hard for them to act the way they were needed to. Instead of having a walking scene through the street we used the car and just the drive to film the first few seconds of the opening to make it easier because the wind restricted us to what we were planning to do. This beginning will be good as we have filmed enough shooting time to use the slide transitions we are wanting to use like in the opening "Definitely Maybe". As it was cold outside and the actors were wearing typical summer clothes we tried to film quickly as the actors were cold and uncomfortable outside in this weather, luckily inside the house was warm.

We thought that the way we shot the character in different positions on the bed worked well and we think it will work well when editing it with the jump cuts. This was easy to shoot as we didn't need to worry about the continuity effects as we wanted to show time had moved on from different shots so we used props to show this effect.
When filming in the kitchen we did loads of shots of the fridge shot in how 'Zoey' should take out the ice-cream needed. We did over 10 shots of having the camera inside the fridge and the different angles and height the camera should be in to get an accurate shot on the characters face going into the fridge. We thought this shot worked really well.

We had a few problems with the camera and the tripod. The camera ran out of battery a few times so we had to delay filming and wait for the camera to charge, while this was happening we discussed what the shots we still needed to do should contain and what we should do to make it better. Also the tripod slanted for the first few shots making the shot of the scene tilt a little we did manage to fix the problem though eventually.

    Storyboard

this is our storyboard for the opening scene of our film, we wanted to make sure we have a variety of different types of shots including: low angles, medium close ups and two shots to make sure we can a diversity of shots. I couldn't draw the different types of angle such as the low angle and the 180 degree rule but by writing over the different types of shots we will know what we need to include in the shots with the angles and movements included, also making note on the shots and side of the shots props will need to include and also making it noted where we need to concentrate on the continuity of the shots following through. We will try and keep to the storyboard as close as possible but on the day we will need to see if these ideas in each specific work and what maybe could make the shot better with different angles, movements and edits on the day of shooting and editing, but will give us a general idea of what we want to achieve and easy to follow through. I think the storyboard shows that we have used our location to its full potential by using outside as well as the inside of the location both more important with each other and giving a feel to the film at the beginning already by showing the setting of the film and where it is being filmed and also showing the home of the main character and introducing the characters personality more by showing her personal face and how she lives in it with the mise en scene. The story board also includes lighting we will be using which is important for what we are wanting to portray in the first few minutes of this film.

    Relationship Between Characters

We want the relationship of friendship to be portrayed strongly in the first minutes of the opening scene, in all romantic comedies there is commonly a girlfriend friendship with the main character where she relays and always counts on throughout her problems and with our film we wanted to represent this as well. Having Zoey and Donna as two opposites a Zoey being quite shy and a hopeless romantic, while Donna is the party animal who always wants to have fun, showing that opposites do attract and become friends. By having two opposite characters with each other it makes the personalities of the characters stand out more as they are so different from one another.

We want the friendship to seem real to the audience and already believe that they have been friends for years. With our actors the people are already good friends and i think this will give the sort of friendship we want to portray well as they already have a trustworthy and fun realtionship.
